Hypnosis as an Adjunct to Tinnitus Retraining Therapy in the Treatment of Persistent Tinnitus

Maria Harasymczuk, Psychologist

This case outlines the successful treatment of persistent tinnitus using hypnosis as an adjunct to tinnitus retraining therapy.  The hypnotic interventions utilised over the two sessions included:  ego-strengthening, symbol of peace, ideomotor signalling, positive suggestions regarding Vicky’s hearing mechanism, and self-hypnosis.  These interventions resulted in a reduction of the client’s tinnitus awareness from 20% to 5% of the time and a reduction in severity rating from 6 to 3 out of 10.
